Taking your dog on a plane –
What you really need to know

Want to take your dog on the plane – and wondering what you need, what's allowed, and which bags will actually get through? We've compared airline rules, compiled the most common mistakes – and uncovered a crucial misconception that repeatedly leads to unnecessary rejections at the gate.

What you need to clarify before booking

Each airline has its own rules for dogs in the cabin. Before you book, you should check three things:

  • Does my airline allow dogs in the cabin – and is there still space available? The number is often limited to two to four animals per flight.
  • What dimensions and maximum weight (dog + bag together) are permitted?
  • What are the entry requirements at the destination? Vaccination certificate, microchip, health certificate – these vary depending on the country.

It's best to call the airline directly. Not everything is up-to-date on the website, and the rules change occasionally.

"The total weight counts – that is, the dog plus the bag together. The lighter the bag, the more grams remain for your dog."

The most common mistake at the gate: Ventilation on all sides

One of the most frequent problems our customers report is being turned away at the gate with the explanation that the bag isn't ventilated on all sides. That sounds convincing – but it's not correct for cabin bags.

Warning – common misconception

The requirement that a transport container be on ventilated on all four sides It must be (with at least 16% total ventilation area), comes from the IATA Live Animals Regulations for the cargo hold This applies to dogs traveling in the hold of the aircraft. There is no official regulation for cabin bags.

What happens in practice? Some ground staff – especially at Eurowings – mistakenly apply this cargo regulation to cabin bags. This is an interpretation error, but difficult to correct at the gate when you're under time pressure.

What you can say at the gate

"The IATA ventilation requirement for all four sides applies to cargo containers according to the Live Animals Regulations – not to cabin bags. Their own airline regulations only require that the bag be breathable. This bag is."

Nevertheless, we recommend: If you fly regularly with Eurowings, you're on the safe side with a bag that has as much mesh as possible on several sides – not because it's mandatory, but because it avoids discussions at the gate.

The right bag: What really matters

The bag is the most important part of your flight. It not only has to meet airline size requirements – it also has to be suitable for your dog and fit in the footwell in front of you.

Fully lockable

All openings must be able to close completely – this is mandatory for almost all airlines. Our AIR bags have all-around zippers to ensure this.

Attachable to the trolley

All 4legs AIR bags can be attached to your suitcase with an integrated trolley strap. No more lugging it through the terminal – you push your suitcase and your dog rolls along comfortably.

How to get your dog ready to fly

The best bag is useless if your dog has never seen it. Familiarity is everything.

  • Weeks in advance: Place the bag open in the apartment. Let the dog explore it on its own, put treats and its favorite blanket inside.
  • Practice short trips: First a car ride, then a busy place, then a train station. Gradually get used to noises and people.
  • Don't overfeed on the day of travel: Last meal at least 3-4 hours before departure. Offer water, but in moderation.
  • Tired = relaxed: A long walk before the flight helps. Many dogs then sleep almost the entire time.
  • Bring along something familiar: A small piece of blanket or a toy with a familiar scent can be calming on a plane.
  • Stay calm: Your dog senses your nervousness. People who are relaxed themselves usually have a more relaxed dog.
For very anxious dogs, a veterinarian may recommend mild herbal sedatives – always in consultation and never without prior testing at home.

At the airport: What to expect

  • Check in early – with the airline, the dog often needs to be registered separately, either by phone or online.
  • Keep your veterinary certificate and vaccination record handy – checks can happen even within the EU.
  • At the security checkpoint: briefly take the dog out of the bag, have the bag x-rayed, then put the dog back in.
  • Your bag must remain in the footwell in front of your seat for the entire flight. It must not be placed on your lap or in the overhead compartment.
  • If you are turned away due to "lack of ventilation on all sides": This rule applies to the cargo hold, not cabin bags. Point this out calmly but firmly.
